Future Rock: Gears

The Chicago based instrumental trio known as Future Rock take a slightly different approach from most of their contemporaries operating in the electronica genre. The modus operandi on the groups 2nd effort entitles Gears is to deploy a multitude of danceable sounds from a simple keyboard, bass and drum setup, forging a feasible balance between the synthetic and the organic. In this case the organic element manifests itself in the bands decision to intersperse their electronic percussion with 'live' acoustic drums on many of the songs to give them their distinctive feel. This method works best on tracks such as "Rock Kit", "Kill, Late", "Die Junge Ein", the amusingly titled "Jesus Would Get The Bigger Speakers" and the Tortoise like rhythms of "God Nose". Over the course of 50 minutes the trio skillfully demonstrates their capability to construct imaginative and engaging beats which come alive through the nicely layered synth effects. Is Future Rock as their name implies the sound of the future? The Jury may still be out on that one, however Gears is still a step forward in the right direction.
