Umphrey's McGee is a jam band for music fans who don't like jam bands.
After a decade of making unexpected yet refreshing music that morphs melodic finesse with technical improv, the Chicago collective issues a live album – in the form of Live at The Murat, a two-disc souvenir of the band's Easter Weekend performance in April 2007 at the Murat Egyptian Room in Indianapolis – that seeks to elevate the band's significance beyond the cult crowd.
With a repertoire as vast as Umphrey's, choosing a set list is no easy task. Yet this sextet wisely opted to open with a 20-minute, four-part version of the popular "In the Kitchen." Synth and guitar effects take over on "The Fuzz" and "Ringo," while guitarists/vocalists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss lead the rest of the band through a bevy of sonic twists and turns, treating listeners to the vintage track "Hajimemashite," the Yes-meets-Little Feat energy of "40's Theme" and the rare and aggressive set-closer "Padgett's Profile." No single player dominates the proceedings, and the group effort ultimately proves why Umphrey's has earned such a devout following.
