Relatively straightforward, but heavy as hell is this brand of Horror/Metal featured on Denial Fiends debut CD, They Rise (Ibex Moon Records). This recording, featuring seasoned veterans of bands such as: Six Feet Under, Massacre, Death (Terry Butler), Mantas, Nasty Savage and others is an infectious, pile-driving freak show. With a nod to the old school they bring you clever (gang shouted) choruses and refrains with a decidedly mosh-inducing groove to songs like "They Rise", and "L.O.D." But when the Kurt Beeson's (Nasty Savage) double bass gets to rolling and Kam Lee's vocals get ruff as "grave soot being shoved down your throat," an attitude that approaches older style death metal can be heard in say, "Son of the Creature of the Black Lagoon". Not many of these "all star" acts are cracked up to what their supposed to be, but this certainly is. Differing tempos, well placed breakdowns and a perfect length keep this interesting and non-monotonous. This baby never lets up from start to end.
