Christian metalcore act Demon Hunter are once again out to rid the world of all the "little nasty buggers" on their fourth release Storm the Gates of Hell. While their priest outfits on the back of the CD cover clearly show the lyrical intent here, the music overall is pretty heavy throughout, with lead-off title track "Storm the Gates of Hell" being a particularly cranking metal song. The band's melodic tendencies though are increasingly on display throughout this release, led by radio friendly anthems "Lead Us Home", "Sixteen" (do I detect a hint of Soilwork on this one?), "Fading Away", "Carry Me Down", and "Thorns", all of which feature soaring, melodic vocals, keyboards, and catchy guitar riffs. For some, there might be somewhat of an absence of heavy material, but thankfully you do get raging metal tracks like "Follow the Wolves", "Fiction Kingdom", "A Thread of Light", and the brutal, hardcore/thrash flavored "I Am You".
Overall, Storm the Gates of Hell is a decent metal album with a nice mix of catchy, hook laden tunes with more extreme fair, and should appeal to fans of Soilwork, As I Lay Dying, and All That Remains. They won't win any awards for originality, but Demon Hunter are showing a clear knack for putting together memorable tunes here, which is a good thing no matter how you look at it.
