Padovoni, Lelio: Chasing the Muse

Lelio hails from Parma in Italy but this is no ham-ateur work (sorry). Lelio teaches rock/metal and fusion guitar styles at several Italian music schools and this is his fourth offering of melodic guitar based instrumentals which began in 2002 following his earlier performance under composer Rhys Chatham in "Symphony for 1000 guitars". The compositions on this album are carefully constructed with gradual build and development of themes within plenty of space. There is also very little of the guitar-God histrionics which often plague other writers. Having said that there is a danger in being too careful and the album does have a rather safe, uninspired feel to it at times due to the rather over-consistent pace employed.

Production is classy and professional, if a little lacking of resonance. A pleasant work from a gifted writer.
