Vesania: Distractive Killusions

If you are at all a fan of symphonic black metal along the lines of Dimmu Borgir or Old Man's Child, chances are you are probably well aware of the Polish veterans Vesania. Put together way back in 1997 by vocalist/guitarist Orion (also of death metal powerhouse Behemoth) drummer Daray (currently in Vader), and bassist Heinrich, the band here is fleshed out by keyboard player Siegmar and second guitarist Valeo. Killusions is the band's third release, and follows the excellent God the Lux which came out late 2005. While Behemoth and Vader remain as Orion and Daray's main bands, it's nice to see that they are finding plenty of time to tour and record with Vesania, and the results of their tenacity can he readily heard throughout Distractive Killusions. This platter is chock full of manacing riffs, symphonci keyboards, murderous blast beats, and Orion's mix of screeching black metal wails and deep death metal growls. While similarities to other black metal acts can be heard, there's also a slight Celtic Frost presence that floats underneath some of the tracks, giving some of these songs a slight avant-garde metal feel which is very refreshing. Most of the pieces are aroun the 5-minute range, so there's plenty of time for heaping amounts of drama and pulverizing onslaught to take place. Highlights are the relentless "The Dawnfall (Hamartia And Hybris)", the crashing blast beats-meets-proggy synth barrage of "Infinity Horizon", the brutal death metal riffing of "Rage of Reason", the powerhouse, gothic black metal that is "Hell Is For Children" (this one's plenty chilling folks!), and the technical extreme metal bonanza "Aesthesis", which has some rampaging drum work and intense guitar scrape sounds that bring to mind Gorguts.

Plenty heavy, plenty menacing, but on that same note plenty majestic & symphonic, Distractive Killusions is another fine album from these Polish black metallers, who are well on their way to having their name mentioned along with some of the leaders of the genre.
