Burning Saviours: Nymphs & Weavers

Like bands like Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Warhorse, Pentagram, Jethro Tull, and Grand Funk Railroad? Then Swedish band Burning Saviours and their latest CD Nymphs & Weavers might just be something you will want to check into. This album features nine tracks of good hard rocking fun, chock full of enough retro guitar riffs, organ, and the occasional flute to satisfy most lovers of early 70's hard rock. Frontman Fredrik Andersson handles lead vocals, acoustic guitar, flute, and organ, and while I'm not quite sold that he's the worlds best heavy rock singer (I detect more of a folk meets Ray Davies styled delivery from him), he does fill out the sound quite a bit with his instrumental abilities, especially on organ, where he adds some nice Purple/Heep touches to "Pondhillows Finest" and a few other tracks. Ultimately it's the thick & meaty riffs of Henry Pyyjkkö (who also delivers some tasty solos) and Mikael Marjanen that really make this album, giving these songs a heavy and doomy vibe at times that pushes all the right buttons. The two rampage through pieces like the progressive "The Spellweaver" , the flute driven romp "Woodnymph", the crushing heavy rock of "Dreaming of Pastries", the early Grand Funk inspired groove tune "Signs", and the creepy, heavy blues rock piece "Exposed To The Heat of Solace". This is the first release with a new line-up, so hopefully the personnel changes settle down as this band seems to have all the talent to make a run at the retro hard rock market.
