Portugal's long running gothic black metal band Moonspell opted for a re-recording of their 1994 release Under the Moonspell along with a few other older tracks from their Anno Satanae EP this time around rather than put out a CD of brand new material. For the older fans, this new presentation of classic Mediterranean black metal from the veteran band using today's technologies will be a welcome addition your metal collection. All the trademarks of the group's early sound is here; ripping guitar leads, crushing riffs, symphonic keyboards, growling & clean vocals, ethereal female backing vocals, and relentless drum blasts. Perhaps after stagnating in a more gothic tinged mire these last few years, the band has rediscovered or rekindled their desire to play their form of black metal again, and if dusting off and re-recording classic cuts like "Tenebarum Oratorium"(both parts), "Halla alle halla al rabka halla", the more grueling, doomy, and death metal feel of "Goat on Fire" & "Wolves From the Fog", or the manic black metal blasts of "Serpent Angel" does the trick and gets them back to doing what they do best, so be it. If you are new to Moonspell and want to hear their current take on their origins, check this out. I for one will be watching where this little detour takes them next.
