Knights Of The Abyss: Juggernaut

On the Candlelight debut Juggernaut, Arizona's Knights Of The Abyss play a somewhat potent blend of hardcore (especially the vocals) and death metal. Kicking things off with the band simulating a television broadcast, it peaks your interest as to what the band may have to say, both lyrically and musically. Sounding almost like Gojira with the opening chords as saggy as a dirty diaper; the band inexplicably shifts gears and becomes more of core infused Morbid Angel? This is the sound they go with for the rest of the disc and it's not bad when considering the competence of the musical skill, but the drums sound is suspiciously electronic at times? Listen to the opening drum breaks in "Emancipation" and judge for yourself. I like that the band makes good use of the guitar in terms of some interesting—but to brief—solo breaks; it still is not enough for them to sound original in today's musical playing field. The songs become rather "samey" around the mid-point of the disc and it was pushing my endurance to the edge. In closing, maybe after another CD and some more experience on the road, the band will be able to make better use of ideas-- less trendy (look at the song titles) and more musically focused in terms of cohesion.
