It wasn't until I unwrapped this puppy and took a gander at the band photo on the back of the booklet that I realized that I had the LP of Brutal Destruction back in the 80's. This was the debut from Belgian thrash band Cyclone, who hit the scene with this metal platter in 1986 care of Roadrunner Records, and it was to be their only widespread release (they did put out a follow-up in 1990 in limited scope) before breaking up a few years later. It's a real shame, as much of the music on Brutal Destruction is quite serviceable thrash, complete with crushing riffs, pounding drums, and high pitched screaming vocals. Fans of Overkill, Metallica, Sacrifice, Sanctuary, and Exodus should have a good time with tunes like "Long to Hell", "The Call of Steel", and "In the Grip of Evil", all mini-thrash anthems with more than competent guitar riffs that never seem to slow down, and plenty of histrionic vocals. "Fighting the Fatal" owes more than a nod to early Metallica, and the final cut on the album "Incest Love" is a speed metal gem featuring manic drum work and dizzying thrash riffs. Production wise, I remembered the original album being somewhat rough, with the vocals being a bit too loud in the mix, and while this remaster from Metal Mind sort of cleans up the mud a bit, the vocals are still a tad overwhelming at times. Still, for a fine example of 80's thrash, you can't go wrong with this little release from these lads from Belgium.
