Krohm: The Haunting Presence

Numinas is Krohm, the one man black metal outfit that has been in existence since the mid 90's with the release of the demo Slayer of the Lost Martyrs in 1997. Now, a few releases and a decade later, Krohm is back with The Haunting Presence, another in a strong line of bleak, atmospheric black metal releases. This one features seven tracks, each one in the 7-9 minute range, with arrangements filled with suffocating guitar riffs, a myriad of keyboards & effects, various forms of percussion, and tortured, mournful vocal rasps. Some of this is quite majestic in a weird sort of way, like the ominous yet melodic "Lifeless Serenade", which almost has a sort of latter day Emperor feel to it, and other pieces like "Relic" and "Syndrome" feature plenty of progressive type passages, making for an almost Pink Floyd-meets-Mayhem feel. The way the guitar riffs morph into linear segments of stark beauty is quite inspiring at times, and many of the arrangements just drip with haunting atmosphere, brought on by the use of odd effects, keyboards, and ringing guitar chords.

The mysterious chap known as Numinas has really put together some ominous sounds here on The Haunting Presence, a platter of black metal that's sure to tantalize your senses as opposed to simply bludgeoning your brain to mush. Well done.
