My Fate: MMVI

My Fate's latest EP MMVI shows a great deal of promise for this Finnish five-piece. After losing their original singer, the band recently hooked up with Russian belter Jukka Ruostila, who has quite the raging set of lungs and is able to mix things up quite well. In case you haven't guessed by now, My Fate are a metal band, and specialize in a thrashy mix of metalcore and death metal, fueled by super crunchy riffs, aggressive vocal shouts & growls, pounding rhythms, and a surprising amount of melodies. There's nothing here on MMVI that you haven't heard before, but the band are good at churning out catchy, heavy tunes like "Noise Machine" and "Upstream", which, despite the lack of originality, are very memorable metal songs. There's just enough nimble guitar fills and pinch harmonics amidst the pummeling riffs and crushing breakdowns, and the ocassional melodic vocals add just enough variety to these four pieces. In fact, the band sound very 'un-Finnish' to these ears, and have just enough commercial appeal that I could easily see them catching on here in the US alongside bands like As I Lay Dying, All That Remains, Hatebreed, and Shadows Fall. There's still a bit of growing and maturing that needs to happen here, but I think My Fate are on the right path.
