Weedeater: God Luck and Good Speed

After a 5 year absence from the scene North Carolina's Weedeater have returned with their 3rd full length recording and for fans of sludgy doom your messiah has come for you! With a sound that can be likened to a crackling and blown speaker cone they pound their way through 9 ("Willow" is a goofy keyboard outro) mind-numbing songs of southern groove. This is for people looking for a sound that is raw, out of focus and in your face. Devoid of any instrumentation theatrics the band does like to make dyslexic twists on "word play" for their lyrics, such as the title song of the CD where singer/bass player "Dixie" Dave Collins philosophizes "Mankind is unkind man!" You gotta love those people who become prophets after they light up!

The production, save for the song "Alone" is handled by the legendary Steve Albini who does his very best to sound like he has done nothing at all! This is like sandpaper against your face and it never lets up except for a very strange, but relaxing banjo job with an almost hummed lyric on the previously mentioned "Alone". The band probably listened to the record back and figured they needed to add a "folky" intermission to this haze-trip. Actually, it works very well as a protagonist because of its defiant clarity which also gives your speakers a much needed rest as well!

This is entertaining, but most likely reserved for true fans of the genre as this is comprised of only the bare & essential ingredients with little variance from the working man like ethic that comprises the songwriting.
