Despite mining similar territory to other power metal bands like Edguy, Helloween, Sonata Arctica, Dragonforce, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, and Stratovarius, Germany's Freedom Call have put together a solid offering here with Dimensions, their latest release of melodic power metal. Combining speedy guitar riffs, double bass drums, soaring vocal harmonies, occasional keyboards, and lyrics dealing with battle themes and fantasy elements, Freedom Call aren't going to knock you over the head with originality, and their frequent dips into Keeper of the Seven Keys era Helloween style bombast often will leave you scratching your head, there's still plenty of memorable and fun songs to be found here. Who can resist the rousing and catchy hooks of tunes like "My Dying Paradise", "United Alliance", or the addicting folk metal of "Far Away", and while there's nothing here that's overly heavy, the rockers of the bunch, like "Light Up the Sky", "Innocent World", "Mr. Evil", and the epic sounding "Queen of My World", offer just enough crunch, speed, and symphonics to keep fans happy and wanting more. While it's safe to say that you can probably get your power metal fix just as easily if not better with any of the bands mentioned earlier in this review, Freedom Call certainly hold their own here on Dimensions. The lead vocals of Chris Bay will instantly remind you of Michael Kiske , Tobias Sammet, and even Tony Kakko, so along with the instrumentation and arrangements, expect to hear a lot of familar elements on this CD, which for loyal power metal fans will be a very good thing.
