Mt. St. Helens: Of Others

Not a bad showing from this Chicago-based outfit but one that fails to add much to the ever-crowded indie rock canon. While influences from acts such as Shudder To Think, Unwound and so forth abound, the group sounds timid and nearly listless on tracks such as "The Time Of Low Volume," "Omission" and "Seething Is Believing." There are some fantastic moments, though, such as the intro to "Strange Navigation" and the all-too-brief "Massive Dosage." A little more confidence and a dash or two more originality and Mt. St. Helens may very well achieve the kind of eruption it so clearly wants to incite with its name.
