Vried are one of those Norwegian black metal bands that have really tried to do something just a little different from everyone else. On their latest I Krig, the band takes the early 90's approach (screeching vocals, super charged drum blasts, and raging tremelo picked guitars) and mixes in plenty of classic rock & folk influences. Opening track "Jarnbyrd" mixes cold black metal with AC/DC meets KISS hard rock influences (love the cow bell guys!), while "Under Isen" has a healthy folk feel, taking a page out of the Finntroll playbook. The 8+ minute title track is a real charmer if you like epic, proggy sounds thrown into your traditional black metal, as this one has strings and keys added in to help kick up the raging metal to new heights. The symphonic & atmospheric "Svart" recalls Vintersorg, while "Dei Daude Steig Av Grav" is a majestic and folky slice of melodic black metal, again reminding just a tad of the mighty Finntroll with its rolling jig-like guitar lines and toe tapping rhythms. Vocals throughout are sung in the native language of Norway, which perfectly meshes well with the music. "Millom Hav Og Fjell", which closes out the CD, throws in some clean vocal chants, traditional metal riffs, as well as passages of intense black metal mania and atmosphere. I Krig overall takes the band one step further from their past as Windir, and the album should appeal to those into modern day Satyricon, Darkthrone, as well as Finntroll.
