Weirdest damn thing, blending punk aggression and stoner lack of aggression but somehow Akimbo pulls it off on this exploration of the back roads and bong roads of American life. "Wizard Van Wizard" comes on like Grand Funk jamming with Sleep and some forgotten VFW hall math rock combo while downing copious amounts of farm animal pharmaceuticals; "Dungeon Bastard" climes and clings with some of the slowest riffing on record this week and "Megatherium" reads like Machine Head-era Deep Purple caught in a gravity chamber without Jon Lord on hand. The real winner here, though, is the closing epic "Stjernaborg." All eight, impossibly noisy and confused minutes of it. Hardly a grand slam of an album––and, five releases into its career, it seems unlikely that Akimbo's going to make you abandon everything and follow the wizard van––but one heck of a hootin' fun ride.
