Selfish Gene, The: The Grand Masquerade

Hailing from the city of Madison in the great state of Wisconsin, this four-man slam machine crafts pop songs that call to mind the brilliance of Spoon but add something to larger indie rock canon. Hooks and bouncing beats propel "Fist Fed Up" and "Bad About It," while "Evolver" and "Bidding War" call to mind vintage '70s pop without cloying retroisms or ironic winks, "Archipelagos" is pure, unadulterated prog-cum-rock-cum-hip-hop; "Fox Hole" is late Gabriel-era Genesis on a Brecht bender and "Wonderfall" stands as the requisite acoustic-driven album closer. Occasionally, you get the sense that the band paints itself into a corner and doesn't quite know how or when to bring songs to a close but it's given us a marvelous gift with this record and demonstrates the kind of promise that could very well make it a grand and shining star in the firmament of American pop.
