Avichi: The Divine Tragedy

The Divine Tragedy is the full-length debut from US black metal band Avichi, the new project of former Nachtmystium guitarist Aamonael and drummer Xaphar. This is 42 minutes of raw black metal, with more than a few nods to Immortal, Mayhem, and Darkthrone, thanks to the extended instrumental passages, moments of dark atmosphere, and the cold, analog sounding production. The guitar riffing on tracks such as "Phallic Insinuation", "Purification within the Eighth Sphere", and "Taedium Vitae" is well thought out and perfectly executed, balanced nicely by some impressive drum blasts and low-register growls (Aamonael chooses not to sing in a standard black metal shriek here, but drops down to a lower register style that sounds pretty menacing) which all add up for a great effect. These guys like to mix it up, so don't expect non-stop blasting here, instead look for plenty of atmosphere, some slower pieces, as well as more frantic numbers. Above all, these Americans have really honed in on the dark, cold, and grim Norwegian sound of the early 90's. If you've been digging the sounds of Ruins of Beverast, 1349, Throne of Katarsis, Watain, or any of the other hotshot bands now permeating the modern black metal scene, then make sure you also check out Avichi's The Divine Tragedy for some truly evil and chilling sounds.
