Tuatara: East of The Sun

The musical collective known as Tuatara has been in existence for over ten years now and was originally conceived as a band that would compose and record primarily instrumental music for soundtracks. The seeds for Tuatara were sown in 1996 when Peter Buck guitarist for REM, Barrett Martin, drummer for Screaming Trees and Luna bassist Justin Harwood found themselves working on new material for a soundtrack demo when it was decided they would keep the songs and produce their own record. This resulted in the critically acclaimed debut effort called Breaking The Ethers which was issued in 1997. Since then members may have come and gone but the core duo of Martin & Buck remain and they've continued to expand their sound to include various different vocalists and special guests many of which freely contribute to East of The Sun which is the bands latest and 4th release overall. Adding to the rich textures and all round laid back vibe on this effort are Victoria Williams, Gary Louris from the Jayhawks and Mark Eitzel from American Music Club not to mention flamenco guitarist Ottmar Liebert turns in some tasty playing on the track "The Spaniard". The lyrical subject matter is based on Eastern religion and reincarnation and the accompanying music at times sounds like a cross between the Dead Man sound track (especially Sufi poet Coleman Barks' spoken word pieces) meets Zorro. Fans of all the bands mentioned in this review will probably dig a good portion of East of The Sun, however if roots / country based rock isn't your favorite style of music then you can afford to pass on this.
