Angeli, Paolo: Tessuti

  • Tessuti are nerves, weaving threads, layers, colors, contrasts.

  • Tessuti is a confrontation and a re-reading of the compositions of two extraordinary musicians who have known how to conjugate experimentation and cantabilita.

  • Tessuti is a creative answer, free to look for poetry in melody and noise.

Tessuti is also the latest CD from acclaimed Sardinian electrified folk guitarist Paolo Angeli. On this third release for ReR Megacorp, Angeli takes this huge acoustic instrument (mostly bowed by the way) souped up with a pickup and runs it through a little amplification, and fires off compostions by Fred Frith and Bjork, sounding like a cross between classical, folk, and King Crimson inspired progressive rock. What's amazing is that each of these tracks features just Angeli and his instrument, which is hard to believe with all the weaving notes and cascading waves of sounds. While the thing looks like a big fat acoustic guitar, it's played more like a cello. One minute it sounds like you are hearing a quirky little Sardinian folk jig, the next some majestic classical melodies come soaring through, and before you can blink some ominous and distorted shards of molten noise hits you right in the face. At over an hours worth of music it's hard to take in all at once, and due to the avant-garde nature of this it certainly won't be for everyone, but if you want to hear something completely different, on an instrument that you sure don't see every day, check Tessuti out.
