June: Make It Blur

It's hard not to like this little band out of Chicago. Sure, on the surface, June is just another emo band that Victory Records is looking to push to the moon. But dig a little deeper, and there's some fine musicianship and pop melodies floating around Make It Blur. Check out the metal guitar crunch of "Swallowed" and "A Taste", the addicting funk-rock of "Sight For Sore Eyes", and the bubbling synth/string drenched proggy pop of "No Time For Sense" (kind of like a combo of Squeeze and Muse) for some fine examples of this band's talents. "Tempter" even has some neat futuristic synth blips which work really well against the hard rock guitars and soaring vocal hooks. Yeah, there's also a few too many stabs at typical emo-ready radio fodder, like "Finally", "Closer", and "I'd Lose Myself", which leads me to believe that this band would love to jump on the Fall Out Boy, All American Rejects, and Maroon 5 bandwagon, but if June plays their cards right and concentrate on the heavier and more adventurous material they seem to be able to put together, combined with these killer hooks, good things can and will happen.
