Queens to Eden, the second full-length CD from New York-based Eve to Adam, is one of those testosterone-laden discs with a loud and gruff vocalist, muscular guitars and just enough melody to help band members avoid sounding like pansies. No wonder these guys and their intense brand of modern hard rock have opened for everyone from Crossfade and Saliva to Daughtry and Tesla. But eventually the band lets up a bit on Queens to Eden and reveals several colorful layers. "Gift" sounds like Live circa Throwing Copper, "Open Door" could be a Velvet Revolver ballad (complete with a Slash-worthy solo, courtesy of Gaurav Bali) and the emotional war-themed "Comin' Home (A Stranger)" proves Eve to Adam has plenty of substance to offer. With 11 songs crammed into 38 minutes, the quartet sonically assaults listeners, taking them through a variety of musical moods. Sure, a few tracks sound too much like every other band vying for airplay on active-rock radio stations across the United States, but there's enough here to separate Eve to Adam from the pretenders.
