Rodgers, Paul: Live in Glasgow (DVD)

Paul Rodgers doesn't perform any Queen songs on his new DVD, recorded live in Glasgow in October 2006. And that's a good thing. The man doesn't need songs from another band songs he had no hand in writing to boost his profile in the rock kingdom.

Instead, the tough yet smooth and soulful voice of rock leads his crack four-piece band through material he recorded with Free, Bad Company and The Firm. Together, they swagger through "The Stealer," "Fire and Water" "I'm A Mover" and "Can't Get Enough" with unmistakable enthusiasm. Rodgers, now pushing 60, sounds a wee bit gruff on some notes, but it's an effective touch, and he dons an acoustic guitar for "Radioactive," plays a walloping harp solo on "Feel Like Makin' Love," takes over at piano on "Bad Company" and closes the show alone on stage singing "Seagull." He also introduces two new songs including the mighty impressive Dire Straits-like "Warboys (A Prayer for Peace)."

Filmed with 13 cameras on the final date of Rodgers' 2006 UK tour, Live in Glasgow should appeal to classic rock fans relieved to see their idols aging gracefully. Rodgers is backed by former Heart guitarist Howard Leese and Collective Soul drummer Ryan Hoyle, bassist Lynn Sorenson and 17-year-old guitar prodigy Kurtis Dengler a baby-faced youngster who has to be seen to be believed. This is a surprisingly compelling 17-song set, complete with bonus band and fan interviews and a way-too-short acoustic performance featuring Rodgers' sound-alike son, Steve, opening one of the UK shows. It will no doubt have viewers reaching for classic albums by Free, Bad Company and even The Firm not, I might add, Queen.
