Infernal External is a 2CD live set originally released in 2000 (now being reissued by the folks at Regain Records) to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the career of the Swedish black metal powerhouse Marduk. Not to be confused with Warschau, the live disc released in 2005 which features their latest singer Mortuus, this platter here contains 18 songs in total, and was recorded when Legion still fronted the band (and recorded in France During The World Panzer Battle Tour). Now Marduk fans have two live documents that each focused on their two most recent, and most popular singers. As evident by Infernal External, Legion had your more traditional black metal rasp, as his ravaged screams and growls permeate Marduk classics like "Panzer Division Marduk", "Those of the Unlight", "Sulphur Souls", "Burn My Coffin", and "Baptizm By Fire". For a live album, the sound is exceptional here, with crowd noises kept to a minimum, and the razor sharp guitars of Morgan and the flailing blast beats from drummer Lars. Morgan especially impresses on the juggernaut "The Sun Turns Black At Night", a tune that features some tasty leads as well as an almost Immortal-ish wall of guitar thunder. Legion's in-between song banter is great, as he keeps up the black metal persona, talking to the crowd in his gravelly & evil voice throughout. The band even pumps out a blistering version of the Celtic Frost classic "Into the Crypts of Rays", played at Mach10 hyper-speed for all you blast beat maniacs out there.
With some cool live photos in the booklet plus full lyrics (when do you ever get that on a live album?), Infernal External is perhaps one of the best live black metal documents you can get your hands on, and proof postive that Marduk are every bit the raging war machine they claim to be.
