Kermania: Ahnenwerk

After issuing a handful of demos since forming in 2002, the black metal outfit hailing from Germany known as Kermania has finally unleashed their full length debut entitled Ahnenwerk. Kermania appears to be a one man operation headed up by Wiegand who plays all the instruments here except for the drums which are handled by a session player. Over the course of 4 tracks spread out over 60 minutes the listener is treated to a healthy dose of aggressive and at times atmospheric black metal. Two tracks clock in at well over twenty minutes but both "Schwertes Schaerfe Beichtgesang" and "Heimatferne Rast" don't come of as being overblown or unnecessary. Sure both tracks feature brief respites from the maelstrom of sound with some quiet acoustic passages but it's the sprawling feelings of despair and overall sense of loss which these tracks convey, that really heightens their appeal. "Veitersberg 1487" comes blasting out of the gates with it's snarling, jagged attack of pure black vitriol and the title track also serves up a healthy dose of melodic aggression. The overall sound and production on Ahnenwerk is very clean and the mix pretty much favors all the instruments evenly. Wiegand also benefits by having a 'live' drummer contribute to these sessions which give the tracks a much more human feel than what we usually hear in a lot of BM these days. All the lyrics, credits, song titles and vocals are done in German so if you're a bit rusty, now's the time to brush up. Ahnenwerk is a finely crafted and nicely executed piece of work that is certainly worthy of your attention.
