Stinking Lizaveta: Scream of the Iron Iconoclast

Post-rock, metal and elements of stoner and doom combine are only a few of the musical styles embraced by Philadelphia's power trio known as Stinking Lizaveta. Their latest and fifth release overall Scream of the Iron Iconoclast finds them once again working with ultra hip producer / engineer/ musician Steve Albini to bring forth their Sabbath drenched grooves. In typical Albini fashion the sound is dry and the focus is left to the band, brothers Yanni and Alexi Papadopoulos (guitars and bass respectively) and drummer Cheshire Augusta to do what they do best and that's rock! A case can be made that an all instrumental album focusing primarily on straight ahead guitar jams in this style, is not only self indulgent but can also get tired very quickly, however but that's definitely not the case here. The rhythm section of Alexi and Augusta is the driving force with their changing tempos and rock solid bottom end, allowing Yanni the freedom to lay down anything he wants over the top with his wah-wah infused solos which reek of pure primal psychedelia. The best way to describe the music on this album is to imagine a musical summit between the MC5 and Fugazi with sprinkles of jazz thrown every once and awhile, but even that really only just begins to scratch the surface. This is 60 minutes of some of the most interesting and intense instrumental music that I've heard in quite awhile. There's no filler here just pure unadulterated kick ass jams.
