Tomahawk: Anonymous

Inspired by Native American material from the 19th Century, this outing from Mike Patton and friends John Stanier and Duane Denison comes off as hit and miss. The best material ("Ghost Dance," "Red Fox") takes up the inspired part and comes off as something new, akin to Robbie Robertson's Native/trip hop exploration Contact From The Underworld Of Red Boy, the worst ("War Song," "Mescal Rite I") barely breaks enough ground to warrant commentary. Patton's unusual musical sensibilities and daring is noteworthy though and if nothing else Anonymous reminds us how lucky we are to have his unique voice in the choir of American music.
