Tony Naima & the Bitters: Dismember

In 1996 Swedish Death Metal legends Dismember held a release party for their latest opus, The God That Never Was. Someone thought it would be cool if Swedish song writer Tony Naima got up at this release party and put his pop/rock/alternative twist on a couple Dismember classics, which he did. People at the party loved it, giving someone else the bright idea that it would be really cool if Tony Naima did a whole album's worth of Dismember classics. Dismember by Tony Naima & the Bitters is the end result of all these great ideas.

Listening to Naima and his Bitters desecrate these Dismember classics is best likened to driving by a horrible car wreck. You know, the one you don't want to look at, but you do anyway. Anyone listening, especially Dismember fans, (as your reviewer is), just can't help but listen in horror as some of their favorite songs are disfigured beyond recognition. Naima is all over the page with his cover versions. At times seeming very folky, ala Bob Dylan style, and at other times sounding like some kind of twisted Beck-like lounge band. The one really cool track on the album that stands out is "Let the Napalm Rain", which is very Dylan-like, but has a nice feel and rhythm that makes it sound and feel like it came right off Pink Floyd's The Wall. It's actually very cool. Other than that there isn't much else to say other than Dismember by Tony Naima & the Bitters is the exact reason alcohol should be prohibited at record release parties in the future.
