Manes: How the World Came to an End
It isn't often one comes across a band with black metal origins that takes such a 360 degree turn musically and changing their sound as dramatically as Norwegian band Manes have done. They did just that on their second album Vilosophe released back in 2003 and they continue their avant-garde stylings here with their latest entitled How the World Came to an End. I can understand incorporating different influences into one's music but after one listen to this disc it's difficult to comprehend why they didn't just change their name altogether because the sounds on How the World Came to an End have very little to do with their earlier sound. The band borrows from a wide variety of musical genres including elements of jazz, trip-hop, electronica and plain old straight ahead rock. Manes does have an interesting sound and it's evident that they're willing to take some pretty daring leaps with their music but I'm not sure this disc has much appeal for even the most open minded metal fan.
