If you missed this release from the French black metal band Celestia the first time around then fear not because the folks over at Paragon Records have given this filthy little nugget some much deserved new life. Originally issued in 2002 Apparitia – Sumptuous Spectre is a fine example of the newer wave of melodic black metal. Although this outfit has been around for over ten years and they have released a handful of splits, demos and one live album, Apparitia remains their only studio release to date which is a bit puzzling considering how good the music is on this disc. The tracks are for the most part fast and well executed examples of vitriolic aggression with a focus lyrically on the black romantic side of things. The production is quite clean and perhaps this is primarily due to the remastering process, but it doesn't dilute their musical vision one bit as they seemingly have no problem countering their aggressive sheets of sound with tasty melodic passages. All in all this is a very promising set of material and while the word is the band is working on their 2nd full length release, Apparitia – Sumptuous Spectre can both serve as a fine introduction as well as tide you over until album #2.
