Two Of A Kind (which actually includes six members) plays the slick, radio-ready anthems and ballads that resuscitated Heart's career in the Eighties. If you shamelessly indulged in albums like Heart, Bad Animals and Brigade – or ever wondered how Boston's Third Stage would sound with female vocals – Two Of A Kind is one heck of a find. The brainchild of Fred Hendrix, vocalist for the Dutch melodic hard rock band Terra Nova, this group boasts two seasoned female lead singers with only the slightest of accents who invoke Ann and Nancy Wilson perhaps better than anyone who came before them (including the lovely Lana Lane).
Esther Brouns and Anita Craenmehr are backed on Two Of A Kind's self-titled debut by Hendrix on bass and his Terra Nova band mates (including brother Ron Hendrix on keys, Gesuino Derosas on guitar and Hans in't Zandt on drums). They make a competent crew that doesn't overplay or turn this warm and inviting music into something too technical or complex. Instead, these gentlemen cede the spotlight to the ladies, who infuse Two Of A Kind's 11 songs with emotion and class while not hesitating to unleash their inner rock chicks. Yeah, it sounds dated. So what?
File this one under "surprisingly charming guilty pleasure."
