Cassius: I Am Jim Jones

Not to be confused with the French dance duo with the same name, Cassius are a hardcore / metalcore quintet that hail from Richmond VA. The dramatic, tension building instrumental opening number "Semitone" gets things off to heavy start with it's plodding ultra sludge style riffs. However things really get turned up a notch with the second track "Homeauxthug" and the fury and intensity doesn't let up for one second as each pulverizing drop tuned track segues into the next with an alarming sense of urgency. Vocalist Myke Terry employs the standard hardcore techniques in his delivery but also lowers his voice down to a death metal growl at times as well for a change of pace. The band pretty much sticks to the same formula musically over the course of the album, but they do experiment a bit sonically as well on tracks like "Tale of The Leper" and "Elate and Subtract". The most lethal one, two punch comes towards the end of the album in the form of "Funeral March" and "Belle Gunness". Both of these tracks pack so much power it's frightening, especially "Funeral March" with its intense barrage of guitars and distorted, white noise vocals. In the end there isn't that much separating Cassius from a pile of other bands making the same style of music but these guys do pack plenty of punch and they deliver the goods. Overall I Am Jim Jones is a better than average debut .
