Odd Logic: Legends of Monta-Part I

Thanks to an abundance of spoken-word passages and effects, the music on Odd Logic's second CD doesn't even kick in until track three. But when it does, get ready to have your mind blown by a distinct sound that melds King's X, Saga, Enchant, Royal Hunt, Symphony X, Queensryche, Pain of Salvation and Praying Mantis. Not much info is available about this American band, whose members sent us a promo CD without packaging and referred us to a web site that no longer exists. But after releasing Parallax Panorama in 2004, they apparently got way ambitious and decided to create Legends of Monta-Part I — a two-act, 24-scene concept album in the grand tradition of conquest and hope, based on the fantasy readings of a grandfather to his grandchild. I lost track of the plot early on, but that didn't diminish the enjoyment of listening to this band absolutely nail each song with tightness, melody, drama and complexity. Odd Logic sound like pros. Oh, if only these guys would have cut some of the filler effects that are intended to move the story along but instead bog it down. Program out all of that, though, and this becomes one stellar progressive hard-rock album.
