Singletary, Marcus: Rocks

As you can guess by the cover of the CD, Marcus Singletary is a guitar slinger, and a pretty mean blues guitar slinger at that. Despite the poor audio quality of many of these songs on Rocks (which sound like a combination of live, demo, and rehearsal tracks), the guy can play a pretty searing brand of blues rock. Those into players like Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, Albert Collins, and Eric Clapton should find a lot to like here, and although Singletary does not come close to the awesome talents of those greats (there's some sloppy yet inspired solos throughout), he sure tries. Tunes like "Can't Ask for More", the cover of Steve Miller's "Mercury Blues", the funky "The Music's Playin' ", and the jazzy "Train" all show the guitarist in fine bluesy form, tearin' it up with plenty of fire, swagger, and emotion. However, the most scorching guitar playing is heard on the leadoff track "Shake Your Body Politic", which, according to the liner notes, does not feature Singletary on guitar. It's a shame that the uncredited player manages to outshine the guy who is the featured performer on the CD.
