Abruptum: Evil Genius

This is a compilation of the Hexum Galaem Zelog and Satanist Tunes demos, plus the Evil 7" EP, re-released here on one convenient CD from Southern Lord Recordings. Abruptum describe themselves as Black Metal/Experimental/Ambient. I would have to agree on all three counts, leaning more heavily on experimental and ambient. Rather than a CD that should be listened to in a normal fashion, Evil Genius is more of a collection of ritualistic music. There are heavily distorted guitars, slow pounding drums, wailing, screaming, and a whole host of other evil vocalizations. While not very musically enjoyable in a melodic/harmonic sense, the CD is slightly malevolent and perverse, while taking on characteristics of Death, Doom, and Black Metal. The production is poor, but that just adds to the ambience. This isn't the kind of CD you throw on in the car while out for a drive. It has a time and a place. Those not familiar with the band or any type of underground Black Metal best leave this one alone. For those that get it, and have a little bit of black in their hearts, it can be rather enjoyable.
