Gaytan, Ann: Emoi

Pretty and civilized, instrumentally rich – from kalimba and oud to violin to programmed percussion and synths – polite, languid but always all grown-up, émoi (translates to "agitation" which doesn't seem overtly present in the music) is an ideal CD for any fans of Marianne Faithfull's post-recovery, non-pop recordings reimagined for that genre known as the French Chanson. In production and presentation, these songs lean to the middle of the road, with that smoky and still energetic sang froid are probably best heard after a few glasses of wine and more than a few decades of life on earth. An unusual release for Carbon 7, an unusual release to review for the Sea, but not an unusual choice for anyone interested in the profoundly lovely and interesting contributions and differences of cultural depth on the song form. Attention de salaire!
