Kataklysm: Live in Deutschland -The Devastation Begins (DVD)

Kataklysm are one of those hard working bands that have been around for a long time, 15 plus years now. But they still seem to fly under the radar, especially in the United States. This is a chance for the people who may not be familiar with the band to get a taste of what they're all about in a great package.

The main video portion of the DVD is Kataklysm live at the Party San Open Air, Bad Berka Germany, August 11th 2006. The show is comprised almost exclusively of material from three Kataklysm releases, Serenity In Fire, Shadows and Dust, and their latest studio release In The Arms Of Devastation. This may be disappointing for some Kataklysm fans, but the set list chosen on this night was in fact killer. The show opens with "Like Angels Weeping", and moves on through such classics as "As I Slither", "Manipulator of Souls", "The Ambassador of Pain", and of course "In Shadows and Dust". The crowd in Germany is frenzied throughout, and imposing vocalist Mauizio Iacono is in full control. The video is well shot, without too much crazy editing or switching shots every split second which seems to be so popular these days. I would have liked to have seen the video shot a bit brighter, with a cleaner picture, but overall the production is very well done here.

The next part of the DVD is a very nice bonus section. As part of the bonus there are four live tracks recorded live at the Medley in Kataklysm's hometown of Montreal. What's nice is the tracks aren't repeats from the Germany show. There is a section containing the five Kataklysm videos they've done over the years. The most enjoyable part of the bonus section is the documentary on the band's 15 years. "The Test of Time" takes an in depth look at the band, which includes some great interviews with the guys. You really see how much Kataklysm cares about their music and their fans. The guys are genuine and sincere which makes the documentary special.

As if the DVD wasn't enough, the other part of this package contains the live CD of the Germany show. For the money you'll be hard pressed to find a better package. This is an absolute must have for Kataklysm fans. And any other fans, Death Metal or otherwise, should put it in their collection also.
