Emo meets hard rock riffs and avant-garde experimentation on the latest from Long Island upstarts Bayside. The Walking Wounded packs plenty of catchy hooks, crunchy riffs, and even the occasional guitar solo, something that is often lacking on releases of this kind. With influences like My Dying Bride, The Smiths, Smoking Popes, and Panic at the Disco popping up here and there, the band mixes in some extended instrumental passages amidst the upbeat arrangements and driving melodies. While certainly not heavy enough for the metal crowd, there's still enough "oomph" in songs like "I and I" and "Thankfully", plus some tasty lead guitar work in "Choice Hops and Bottled Self Esteem" and "the title track, which also contains some odd Zappa-ish passages as well. Ultimately though many of these songs tend to sound the same, and the lead vocals tend to be a little too much on the syrupy side. However, if you dig modern emo that makes a strong attempt at adding in some instrumental muscle, you might like The Walking Wounded.
