Antaeus: Blood Libels

As far as raw and brutal Black Metal goes it doesn't get much more extreme than France's Antaeus who have delivered a definite contender for the crown with their 5th full length release Blood Libels. A look at their back catalogue reveals such titles as Cut Your Flesh and Worship Satan and Satanik Audio Violence so it's not too hard to see exactly where these guys are coming from. The music here is delivered at such an incredibly vicious pace with very little or no respite and their violent attack is about as subtle as being hit over the head with a sledgehammer. The dual guitar work of Set and Servus is cranked out with typical speed metal urgency and unlike some BM releases the guitars actually have a nice tick tone to them and none of this thin or tinny sounding tone which is typical of what a lot of bands in this genre end up going for. The drumming courtesy of Zvn is also quite impressive and while it doesn't deviate much from it's breakneck pace, the blast beats are quite solid as a whole. The vocals are handled quite admirably by one MkM who sounds like he's run this throat through a cheese grater to get that extra added je ne sais quoi. The lyrical imagery as well as the visuals contained within the CD's leaflet are quite graphic and deal with self mutilation and everything else worthy of Satan's praise, what more could you ask for? Antaeus have been kicking around now for more than 10 years, have certainly paid their dues and sworn their allegiance to the Dark Lord. The release of Blood Libels is certainly going to kick their international profile up a few notches. Listen at your own risk!
