Negative Plane: Et In Saecula Saeculorum

The seeds for this Black Metal outfit from northern Florida known as Negative Plane were first sown back in 2001. After a few early demos and some lineup changes their debut CD Et In Saecula Saeculorum has now been unleashed for the masses courtesy of The Ajna Offensive in the United States. The core duo of Negative Plane, Nameless Void (guitars, vocals) and Bestial Devotion (drums) offer up an album rife with strong occult themes and imagery that pays tribute to some of the best old school BM of the 80's and while those references are firmly on display they also manage to carve out a style of their own quite nicely. The bands intro sample comes by way of a Fabio Frizzi composition taken from the soundtrack to the 1981 Italian horror film The Beyond and it's a great way to set the tone as they waste no time after that by crashing into the first track "The Chaos Before The Light". This song is highlighted by it's driving rhythm, buzz saw guitar assault, varying tempo changes and a few Tom G. Warrior vocal grunts thrown in for good measure. The rest of the album follows along the same lines stylistically and although the songs generally run in the 8 to 9 minute range, they're able to keep things interesting by sticking to the above formula. The one exception is the short, creepy organ instrumental which basically only serves as an introduction to the final track "Advent Of The Beast". Nameless Void's vocals and impressive guitar work along with the tight solid drumming from Bestial Devotion make this a release worthy of your attention. The production on Et In Saecula Saeculorum is above average as all the instruments including some very audible bass work is evenly balanced in the mix. This is a very respectable debut for Negative Plane and for fans who appreciate the complete package, an album they will want to seek out.
