Black Metal doesn't much more brutal than this folks. Sweden's Marduk unleashed their first full length CD of blasphemy upon an unsuspecting world in 1993 in the form of Dark Endless. Now, reissued by the nice folks at Regain Records, this terrifying collection of Satanic black metal brutality, complete with live bonus tracks, can once again be enjoyed by all, or discovered for the first time by Marduk newbies.
There's nothing subtle at all about the music of Marduk, as these Swedes just pound the listener mercilessly with raging tremelo picked guitar riffs, the occasional slow dirge, maniacal blast beats, and a never ending spewage of evil vocals. The production from legendary Dan Swano really fits the cold, menacing tone of the music, as songs like "Still Fucking Dead", "Within the Abyss ", and "Departure from the Mortals" just leap out of the speakers with with death metal savagery and black metal precision. The guitars of Morgan are heavy, and I mean heavy, throughout, as he mixes all sorts of parts that were born not just from black metal but also the Swedish death metal world. The end result is one hell of a debut from a band that would go on to terrorize the world for many years, and continue to do so as we speak.
The extra live bonus tracks are of sub-standard sound quality, but show how much power Marduk display in a live environment. "Black Goat" alone is worth the price of admission alone, a pummeling monstrosity of a song with lurid vocals and an endless supply of mammoth riffage. Regain Records is reissuing all the early Marduk albums, as well as releasing their brand new one Rom 5:12, so the time is ripe to celebrate the "career of evil " of one of the longest reigning black metal bands around.
