Brazzaville: East L.A. Breeze

The lush, soothing sounds of Brazzaville is the brain child of one David Brown (guitar, vocals) who formed this collective of musicians from friends on the L.A. music scene in the late 90's. After releasing 3 albums Brown packed up his belongings and relocated to Barcelona Spain in search of like minded musicians in which to play with in a new version of Brazzaville. Not long after Brown's new lineup was in place they suddenly found themselves developing quite a loyal following in places such as Russia, Turkey, Berlin and not surprisingly Barcelona. Now Vendlus Records brings us the groups 6th and latest release East L.A. Breeze which is a marvelous collection of melancholic pop.

The instrumentation on the majority of the songs on East L.A. Breeze revolves around the standard guitar, drums and bass formula but Brown also taps into some different sounds as well such as violin, trombone, electronic percussion and what appears to be pedal steel guitar which adds that little bit of extra texture. The songs have a brilliant, laid back and exotic feel to them that it's hard to not picture mental images of seaside cantinas basking in the sun while palm trees sway gently in the sea salt flavored breeze, get the picture? Not to mention Brown's romantic melodies are perfectly suited for the warm and gentle timbre of his vocals. Everything is aligned perfectly on East L.A. Breeze and this is the perfect record for the escapist in you and one I know I'll be reaching for myself quite a bit.
