Chest Rockwell: Chest Rockwell vs. the World

It's nice to see that there are still indie bands that are pushing the envelope. Chest Rockwell, from Kentucky, are one such band, and their latest release Chest Rockwell vs. the World is a eclectic mix of styles that offers up a little something for everyone. These guys are pretty well adept at being a pop band, but there's more than just shimmering hooks and catchy melodies here. The band can rock out pretty hard, as they do so well during "On the Edge of Intensity", and "La Fin Absolute du Monde" is well done atmospheric gothic rock (love the nod to the John Carpenter Masters of Horror episode "Cigarette Burns" guys!). If you enjoy more accessible, melodic fare, there's "Mayhems Leap of Faith" and "What Atrocities Are These", both moody yet modern pop rock that shows the songwriting talent of the band. There's even some moments of emo-laden metal on "Leeloo Dallas", and a little post-rock/prog/punk on the epic closer "Multi-Pass", complete with screaming vocals and aggressive guitar and drum barrages. Overall, this is promising stuff from a band that has some of the goods to take things to the next level.
