Christ Agony: Elysium

Some bands try real hard to capture a moment in time with their music, somtimes successully, mostly not. The latter is the case with Poland's Christ Agony and their release Elysium. Obviously heavily influenced by Venom, Bathory, Celtic Frost, Slayer, and Anvil, all big players of the early 80's extreme metal scene, Christ Agony fall short of coming anywhere close to the groundbreaking sounds of any of those bands. Basically a trio of Cezar on guitar & vocals, Blackie on bass & vocals, and Thoarinus on drums, most of Elysium is competently well put together, but there's just no originality to any of the songs. Sure, there are some crunchy riffs on pieces like "Eternal Stars" and ""Fiery Torches", and Thoarinus at times plays his ass off on the drums, but the vocals throughout are just horrible, and there's way too much of a punk vibe coming through on some of these songs (much like early Venom) that simply gets in the way of what Christ Agony seems to be trying to accomplish, which is come up with a classic sounding metal album with extreme tendencies. To make matters worse, the artwork and photos of the band screams black metal, but there's nothing even remotely resembling that to be heard.

Better luck next time guys.
