Horna: Ääniä Yössä

As far as pure black metal underground cult bands go you'd be hard pressed too find many with the credentials of Finland's Horna. Initially formed back in the early 90's the group has delivered 6 albums to date including their latest Ääniä Yössä as well as over twenty EP's and split releases. Although the band performs live as 5 piece unit, the filth conjured up on this disc was performed solely by members Shatraug (guitars) and Corvus (vocals). The main reason for this was that Ääniä Yössä was not originally conceived as Horna release proper so the duo decided to record it themselves in order to keep their initial vision as primitive as possible. Primitive would be a good word to describe the overall performances on this disc as the cold, grim feelings and raw, abrasive attack are about as effective as a mallet to the head. Don't bother trying to understand the lyrics as they're all in what I presume is Finnish, however the lyrical themes deal with a curse called Yersinia Pestis which supposedly played a role in the Black Plague in Europe in the 14th Century. Even though the hypnotic title track clocks in at a whopping 21 minutes the majority of Ääniä Yössä feels almost like one continuous piece of music as some of the same guitar riffs reappear from time to time. Ääniä Yössä succeeds not only due to its primordial, spellbinding and unrelenting assault on the senses but also because their bleak and discordant vision resonates long and hard, thus reminding you of your own sad and miserable existence. Recommended.
