Swallowed in Black, Sadus' sophomore release, sees the California thrash act taking things to the next level after their exciting but flawed debut Chemical Exposure. A lot of what you get here is still that noisy, technical cacophany, but Sadus have added a bit more variety on these songs, occasionally slowing things down a tad, as opposed to their non-stop speed assault heard on their debut. "Man Infestation", as well as "Wake", are good examples of this, as the band work with slower and more grinding riffs that add a new element to their speed-of-light thrash attack. The production by Michael Rosen added a beefier tone this time around, giving the guitars of Rob Moore and Darren Travis a huge crunch, with the gymnastic bass lines of Steve DiGiorgio rippling about in the background. There are some elements of death metal amidst all the thrash, like the killer riffs and evil vocals of "False Incarnation ", which has an air of Death meets Slayer about it. However, what this band has always been know for is technicality and speed, which you get plenty of on tracks like "Images", "Black", the epic "Arise", and "Powers of Hate", all complete with pummeling drum work from Jon Allen and blurring riffs and notes from the other three musicians.
This Metal Mind remaster comes with full lyrics, bonus demo tracks, and an essay on the band. It's a better sounding remaster than the debut, and overall this album is a step up for the band, as they started to really mature as musicians, a process that became fully realized on their third release A Vision of Misery.
