Lac Placide are a French band originally formed in the late 90's who have put out one full length album along with an EP up until now which sees the release of their 2nd disc called Closer. It's difficult to pin the bands down stylistically, however it would be suffice to say they bring together some of the finer elements of progressive rock and metal quite effectively. I'll begin with the things that work effectively for Lac Placide. First of all the band is blessed with some absolutely fantastic musicians who have more than enough chops to pull off the technical and challenging music presented here. The interplay and tradeoff solos between guitarist Sénéchal Morin and keyboardist Le Bourgmestre Ville are reason enough to get die hard prog fans excited as the band delivers endless time and tempo changes with ease. As mentioned the music is both complex and challenging not only to play but to listen to as well and this incidentally is where part of the problem comes in. The complex music is not as much of an issue as is the band electing to employ two lead vocalists to sing over these multifaceted arrangements, in two different languages. For almost 70 minutes Sa Majesté Roy and Le Rôdeur Renaud sing the albums lyrics in both French and English, sometimes at the same time. It was distracting and actually took away from my complete enjoyment of the music. I felt I had to concentrate too much instead of letting the music and the overall listening experience just flow naturally. My feeling is they should decide which language they want to sing in and just go for it, be it French or English. Closer is still quite impressive as a whole musically and has plenty to offer, but for this reviewer it managed to come up a bit flat.
