Fatal Smile: Neo Natural Freaks

Led by the throaty vocals of H.B. Anderson, Sweden's Fatal Smile celebrates aggressive, old-school glam-rock that sounds distinctly American. Even the title of the Stockholm-based quartet's second album, Neo Natural Freaks, seems like it could have been spawned in the corner of a whorehouse somewhere in seedy central Florida. Mixed by Stefan Glaumann, famed for his work with Rammstein and Stockholm's own glam-punkers Backyard Babies, Neo Natural Freaks brings modern-day attitude to musical ideas rooted in the Eighties and Nineties. "Quiet Chaos" and "Practice What You Preach," for example, have a thick and dirty post-grunge feel to them, while "Bleeding Kiss" and "Dead Man Walking" sound like bastard children of Motley Crue and King's X. On the other hand, the title track and "Learn-Love-Hate" would fit right in on today's heavy-rock radio stations in the United States. Familiar and dangerous at the same time, these 10 songs churn with a dynamic retro/current vibe that packs plenty of potential — which means Fatal Smile should put shameless grins on many hard-rock fans' faces.
