E M is the third CD from the experimental, eclectic power trio known as IZ. The group is made up of primary composer Michael Lance Serviolo (guitar), David Kerman (drums) and Tom Sublet (bass, synthesizer) and when you put the sounds of these 3 musicians together you get IZ in all it's glory and weirdness. While Sublet lays down miles of funky, thick bass lines and Kerman is extremely busy rhythmically behind the kit, Serviolo plays everything including the kitchen sink slashing out jagged chords which combine the intensity of metal and all the intricacies of prog. Some tracks stretch out in their musical explorations while others seem like mere brief sound collages. "Etudes of Saturn / Hunting Lodge Tank" instantly brought to mind ConstruKction of Light era King Crimson with its dramatic, slow build in tension and release, not to mention Serviolo does seem to have hints of Belew in his playing. E M was a bit hard to digest on the first few listens and it took some time for me to really appreciate what they were trying to achieve with this release. That being said, music fans looking for something a little left of center should enjoy this one and will want to seek it out.
